Nissan Stanza (Albany Library)

This was one of the first art cars I ever saw in Berkeley, and it would pop up on occasion during the pre-collection days. But once I started snapping pictures of Berkeley cars, it disappeared. After two years, I spotted it at the Albany Library one evening, and thankfully it didn’t escape while I went [...]

Volkswagen Beetle (Sonoma)

Is this the producer of Toy Story 2 or just a big fan? I don’t know, but they did spring for the vanity plates. Classy.

Honda Civic (51st St., Oakland)

Stache has been telling me about this car for more than a year. The car has Alaska plates and seems to appear in Oakland sporatically, so I’m glad I was able to catch it. The detail in the beading is quite remarkable (third picture is more closeup). I didn’t get a very good picture of [...]

Ford Econoline Van (Albany Waterfront)

I’ve seen this van a few times, always on near the Berkeley marina or Albany waterfront, appropriately enough. It’s not as vibrant as this sea-scape van, but I’m happy to bring it into the fold.

Dodge Caravan (Hunters Point, San Francisco)

As a side benefit of seeing the Life Sized Mouse Trap show, I scoped out this minivan accross the street. This is one of the most intricate and detailed vehicles I’ve seen. It seems to be a model of the SF Bay Area sprawled over the surface of the van. I couldn’t find my house, [...]

What kind of car is this? (UC Campus)

I need your help, o fans of Berkeley cars! I scoped this econo-box parked on campus, and in my haste to get to work, I neglected to determine its make and model. The label above the grill says “Spitfire,” but its clearly not a Triumph Spitfire. Further Google image searches were unsuccessful as well, so [...]

Dodge Dart (North Berkeley)

Below is a relative of the 1930′s Plymouth cloud car I posted last year. For more info on the Dart, see the Wikipedia entry or Muscle Car Club. Notice also the building in the background. I don’t know what Subway is, but apparently clouds are their theme.

Volkswagen Beetle (South Berkeley)

‘Stache left me a late night voice mail directing me to this VW Bug in the Bezerkeley car hotbed on the south side of town. Each side of the car sort of has its own theme to it, and there are quotes all over it.

Ford F250 (Berkeley Hills)

You have to love that Jim Dandy. He’s in town for two days, and spots a Berkeley car, no trouble. This truck claims to be a “Grease Truck” since it runs on used vegetable oil. For more info on converting your engine to biodiesel see AlterNet and BioDiesel.net. I think this is the first landscape [...]

Honda Civic (North Berkeley)

It’s been almost five months since I posted a Berkeley car. Part of this respite was the destruction of my own vehicle. But the sled is back in action, which means the scouring of the East Bay is underway. This Civic is the first entry in the Return to Glory:

Daihatsu Charade (51st St. Oakland)

Jim Dandy and ‘Stache gave me a tip on this one in ‘Stache’s neighborhood. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a Daihatsu in person before, but it seems like the kind of car you would modify. Also, does ‘charade‘ seem like a good name for an automobile? With synonyms like ‘parody,’ ‘lampoon,’ ‘spoof,’ ‘mockery,’ [...]

“Art Cars” Flickr Pool

For even more Berkeleyesque cars see the Flickr: Art Cars Pool at Flickr. Currently, there are quite a few from the Houston Art Car Parade, although I consider this type of collection cheating.
