The 2000 Presidential Election and the Foundations of Party Politics (Richard Johnston, Michael G. Hagen, Kathleen Hall Jamieson)
Monday, August 16th, 2004

[2000 Presidential Election and the Foundations of Party Politics]I’ve been thinking a lot about politics lately (not surprisingly), so I thought I’d see what Kathleen Hall Jamieson had to say about that wacky 2000 election. For the most part, there wasn’t anything earthshattering, but they believe that Clinton really did hurt Gore’s chances, despite his high approval rating. Weird. It was a little heavy on the sociological terminology, but otherwise quite interesting.

College football
Sunday, August 15th, 2004

The preseason college football AP rankings have come out, so I just thought I’d make a couple of observations:

1) Georgia and Texas are ranked in the top 10 again. Georgia even got 5 first place votes. A bad season by them puts them at the top of the list.

2) Cal received 744 points. That’s 743 more points than ND. If Cal finishes this season in the top 15 and ND is unranked, I’m buying season tickets next year.

3) I keep reading about how ND is playing a killer schedule. Well, according to this poll, there are 4 games against ranked opponents: Michigan, Purdue (and we know they’ll drop out), Tennessee, and USC. I don’t see a killer schedule. I see a schedule that IF they get by Mich in week 2, things might come together, and they could make a run at a NC. It’s only a killer schedule because ND likes to play State, Purdue, and BC like they’re the freaking ‘88 49ers, ‘87 Edmonton Oilers, and ‘27 Yankees. If ND doesn’t put it together, see point 2.

4) There is only one team on the Cal schedule ranked higher than them: USC. We both know that for some reason, USC has trouble with the Bears, but they might have a little extra something this time around since the Golden children cost them half a NC. October 9th, mark your calendar.

Garage sale-ing leads to plethora of Berkeley cars
Saturday, August 14th, 2004

This Saturday morning turned out to be a banner day for Berkeley cars. I was riding with Jim Dandy and Stache on the garage sale hunt, taking us down side streets and parts of Berkeley that I normally wouldn’t see.

Honda CRV (Westbrae, Berkeley)

All I can think of with this one is an SUV in a clown suit. Chalk that one up in the “Only in Berkeley” column.

Mercury Cougar (South Berkeley)
Saturday, August 14th, 2004

This was another good catch by Jim Dandy. The side is a space theme with the comets and galaxy. The trunk breaks from the theme with the trunk on fire and mushrooms on the top (see more).

Honda CRX (South Berkeley)
Saturday, August 14th, 2004

Approaching this Honda, we didn’t notice anything uncommon. However, as we neared, Beaudry realized that this car was anything but ordinary. It is actually covered in artificial turf. I thought a picture of one of us on top of it with a putter would be funny, but alas Stache doesn’t carry a putter in his car.

Ford Econoline Van (Downtown Berkeley)
Saturday, August 14th, 2004

Volgraf knew about this van’s permanant parking space next to People’s Park, so we rolled up for this drive by shot.

The cyclop sun on the hood of this one kind of freaks me out.

Angels and Demons (Dan Brown)
Sunday, August 1st, 2004

[Angels and Demons]The similarities between this book and The DaVinci Code are striking, so if you like one, you’ll probably like the other. This one is a very fast read, with enough twists to keep you off balance and wanting to read that next 3 page chapter.
